Different energy sources provide us with the power we need to live and work. Geothermal, solar, wind and biomass are some of the sources. In addition to being a major source of electricity they can also be used to transport and heat. The biggest issue with these energy sources is that they can cause greenhouse gas emissions when they are burned to produce electricity. This leads to the need for renewable energy sources that are more sustainable.
Fossil fuels are the most well-known form of energy. They include coal, oil and natural gas. They were created millions of year ago when prehistoric animals and plants passed away and were buried under layers of sedimentary rocks. After that, under the appropriate conditions, they gradually transformed into carbon-rich compounds that, when burned, generate energy. These fossil fuels are not renewable as they will run out in our lifetimes or even in many lifetimes.
Renewable energy sources are constantly replenished. The primary renewable energy source is sunlight, which provides light and heat. It is used for our homes, businesses, and cars. Wind is a different renewable energy source that produces electricity by spinning turbines. We have used it since humans first discovered how to harvest the wind for millennia. We also use biological processes to make an ethanol (a clear alcohol that can be used as a fuel) from waste and crops.
Of all these sources hydropower is the biggest renewable energy source in the United States, though wind and biofuels are expected be the next to take over. Hydropower is a natural cycle to harness water’s rapid flow, which in turn is used to produce electricity.
